I think you have to look at it from a systems point of view. You can't really effectively use just a componant of someone's cloud. You need to use CPU, memory, disk, network and so on. If you can distill this into the West Texas light sweet system hour then you might be able to have a basis for comparison...

If a few large providers publish price points and their specs, then they
can act as a reference.  The value of CPU, FSB speed, cache, etc depends
on the application.  So long as providers publish their technical specs
then we can assess what the "real value" is to the application based on
it's needs.

Modulo a monkey wrench in any performance analysis: VMM vendor, version,
kernels, and configuration/options.
