I recently mentioned the the cloud computing concept to a client (i.e. to offer cloud computing to their customers) and got the following email response:
"I have passed this through our IT dept. and their view was that the big players (Microsoft and Google) are leaving little room for other companies to grow in this area. "
To what extent is this true/false?
Google isn't, so far, much of a player. But one might make an argument that Microsoft and Amazon will emerge to be pretty dominant platforms. That said, you need to specify what you mean by "this area" to have a conversation about who will win. In the short to medium term there is nothing close to a lock-out for new competition for Amazon. In the long term even if one believes that Microsoft and Amazon will sew up the hosting market there are still hundreds of ways for cloud companies to live in the ecosystem and grow into huge businesses.
