Barbara and group, what percentage of the Intra-Cloud computing resources are still physical? If you read the hype from VMware, the world is going virtual. Is there still a need for dynamically provisioned physical servers for as you state "development, testing and to experiment and work out ideas".
I talked to a bank in Seattle who is now part of a National bank who stated they still have so many internal vertical infrastructure silo's that a Intra-Cloud would be the next logical step to cross breed technologies, share resources and expertise. I believe this this is the first major step towards the "cloud" and externalization to be the next step after storage (de-duping and security mainly), network bandwidth (positioning the physical or virtual image to the cloud) and security (network layer 2, access to the image and to the hosting environment) are worked out.
The layer 2 network segmentation can be accomplished today with VLans, however the physical wiring needs to be adjusted so a workload/physical server/virtual server can be dynamically moved without having the router and VLan definitions following in a text file to be implemented on the other side.
Cisco and Liquid Computing have some of this figured out.
The other side is the downsizing of IT staff. The IT world will for the short term be compressed with storage, network and sys-admins becoming a universal solider of sorts covering all technologies.
Regards,
Bruce
