[ Cloud Computing ] Re: Cloud Computing for greener outcomes

The Uptime Institute studies are great, and in particular the recent report released by McKinsey with Uptime's help is insightful. The key to reducing the impact of the worlds data centers on the environment is to get more efficiency out of the infrastructure. There are some fairly startling numbers in the McKinsey report, stuff like on average servers in data centers are utilized at approximately 6%.

Your exactly right in pointing out that cloud architectures, whether they be public or private, provide a potential avenue for increasing utilization, and thus reducing the carbon footprint.

To get the report click "Resources" and then "McKinsey Report". Registration is required but it's free.

Take care,

Louis

We have done some analyses of the Environmental Cost of Cloud Computing contrasted to OnPremise
This was a limited review and t paucity of information on embodied Carbon cost from H/W vendors hampered the stud.
BUT
It was clear to us Cloud Computing provides a potentially higher level of utilisation and therefore significantly lower Carbon footprint.
Anyone seen other studies?
